Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that uses breast implants to enhance the size and contour of the breasts, to balance the breast size if differences exist, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy and as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.
The implants are made of silicone shell which is filled with silicone gel or cohesive silicone gel. Most implants are using these fillers, as the substance provides best durability, malleability and most form-stable. It resembles breast tissue to a certain degree, rendering more natural-looking breasts in appearance and feel.
A roughened, textured surface on the silicone shell is preferable by some surgeons to a smooth surface, as it was thought to cause less capsular fibrosis, and contraction.

Technique and Placement of implants
Implants are placed in pockets either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall.
The type, profile and method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. Considerations include amount of breast tissue, degree of breast ptosis, and thickness of the pectoral muscles, among other factors.
